The Fortress on the Maota Scarp
Commissioned 1156 CE by Rawal Jaisal // Bhati Rajputs
Built in 1156 by the Bhati Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal, the fort stands on Trikuta Hill. Unlike other forts that serve only as museums, nearly a quarter of Jaisalmer's old city population still lives within these walls, making it a unique living heritage site.
Constructed entirely from yellow sandstone, the fort's appearance shifts from honey-gold during the day to tawny brown at sunset. It features 99 bastions, elaborate gateways (pols), and stunning Jain temples within its labyrinthine alleys.
"The golden fortress that defies the shifting sands of time."
