The Fortress on the Maota Scarp
Commissioned 1592 CE by Raja Man Singh I // Kachwaha Rajputs
Long before the pink stucco walls of modern Jaipur were ever conceived, the seat of Rajput power resided here, wedged inside the jagged throat of the Kali Khoh hills. Built of pale yellow and pink sandstone covered in pure white marble, Amber Fort is a fascinating study in architectural diplomacy.
Because the Kachwaha rulers formed high-level matrimonial and military alliances with the Mughal Emperors, Amber was flooded with war spoils and Persian master craftsmen. It stands as the physical birthplace of the 'Mughal-Rajput' architectural style.
"He who has not seen the Sheesh Mahal at Amber does not know what light can do to stone."
