Chapter 01 • Architectural Genesis

The Fortress on the Maota Scarp

Commissioned 1887 CE by Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II // Kachwaha Rajputs

Initially envisioned as a town hall, the building was transformed into a museum on the suggestion of Dr. Thomas Holbein Hendley. It was named after King Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales, who laid its foundation stone during his 1876 visit to Jaipur.

A quintessential example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, the design blends Rajput, Mughal, and Gothic influences. The building features large central domes, intricate stone latticework (jaali), and cusped arches, reflecting the architectural fusion popular during the British colonial era.

"The threshold where the artistic history of Rajasthan meets the world's ancient civilizations."
