The Fortress on the Maota Scarp
Commissioned 7th Century CE by King Chitrangad Maurya // Maurya, later Mewar (Sisodias)
Chittorgarh was the historic capital of the Mewar kingdom. It has witnessed three major sieges (1303, 1535, 1567) and is globally renowned for the acts of 'Jauhar' performed by the royal women to protect their honor. It remains a symbol of Rajput gallantry and sacrifice.
The fort is fish-shaped, covering 700 acres with a 13 km perimeter. The complex features seven massive fortified gates (Pols), 65 historic structures including palaces, 19 temples, 20 functional water bodies, and two iconic victory towers, all constructed in the pure Rajput architectural style.
"A fortress that never surrendered its spirit, only its walls."
